Description

Dismal Detailed Minimalism – This technique uses disturbing imagery alongside more normal images, emphasizing these minor and minimal lines, objects, and colors to portray multiple expressions and ideas.

The four layers are:

Layer 1 - the individual in the front is holding a basket full of shekels, which is leaking out of the bottom (symbolic of making and losing money; if only "money grew on trees," gold does come from the earth).

Layer 2 - the individual to his/her right is also holding a basket full of shekels, as well as a bloody rag to the sky, and is weeping shades of indigo (the imagery of an individual having something of value yet still crying to the sky in pain or anger; the bloody rag represents "Mother Nature," which could be a Kotex, Maxi pad, or a "sanitary napkin").

Layer 3 - the two individuals are shaking hands with one of them holding a sharp, knife-like object behind his/her back; the other individual is about to be stabbed in the back by another individual hat is located off of the page (this imagery suggests that no one is to be trusted; everyone has another kind of plan for acting with us, and sometimes we never know who it is that "laid the final blow").

Layer 4 - the sky and sun is the final layer, the "background," in which all of these actions are transpiring ("everything/anything under the sun"). The grass in the front is supposed to represent the minutiae, or the resistance, individuals have to wade through in life. The end of the grass and the light shadow represents a final threshold to cross over, leaving that world and way of doing things behind (you could argue that this is a fifth kind of layer). So, the individual in the front looking out past the grass is closest to crossing that final threshold. But she/he looks worn, stressed, and perhaps unsure about crossing that final threshold.
